Design Principles

Sustainable Design & Practices:
EcoScapes is committed to developing highly sustainable and ecologically sound landscapes. EcoScapes designers are well versed in ecological and Permaculture design and make every effort to develop systems that are interdependent and include water efficiency, regionally appropriate plant and material selection, optimal plant placement, analysis of soil quality, amendments and mulches that respond to specific micro-climates by providing summer shade, wind protection and winter warmth. Watering systems draw from various areas and utilize passive water catchment techniques, as well as active water harvesting storage systems.

Aesthetic:
As we design a garden, we strive to develop a continuous style that threads its way throughout the entire design. Taken into consideration is the visual connection of the landscape to existing structures and natural surroundings, providing a series of textures and seasonal interests, the creation of one or multiple focal points, and the balance between vertical and horizontal elements, all the while respecting the client’s personal style.

Recommendations:
At all times, we work within the client’s budget and will offer guidance on the phasing of project construction if the client desires.  We will also take into consideration future landscape ideas or building projects on the same site. As a job is completed, we offer guidance for maintenance and irrigation practices for the ultimate health of a client’s landscape.

Design Steps

Introduction:
Introduce the client to EcoScapes portfolio and philosophy. Reflect on the larger context of the property, such as, site, cultural and natural history of the area.

Interview:
Initial interview with the client covers current and desired use of the space, planting considerations, ground plane and grade changes, the occupant’s personal style, and any other pertinent information.

Site Analysis:
Initial site analysis includes soil analysis, topography, and predominant influence of winds, solar orientation, observation of erosion patterns, overhead utility wires, roof runoff, noise and building style.

Design Process:
Define multiple options for use of space, diagram circulation patterns & relationship between functional elements, then narrow alternatives. An initial sketch is then produced using Photoshop and/or AutoCad, construct section and elevation drawings as needed. Options are then discussed with the client and followed up with revisions.

Estimate:
We aim to have a ten-day turnaround on all estimates after the design is submitted and approved.

Getting Started:
After the design is completed and a project budget is established, a member of the EcoScape’s team will lay out any hardscape areas using stakes or other marking devices, in order to produce a onsite visual representation for the client. Once this phase is completed, to the satisfaction of both the designer and client, we are free to begin construction.
